Rode has unveiled a sleek handheld addition to its Wireless range – the Interview Pro – designed for creators who want pro-quality audio without the fuss

For users of the latest-generation Rode Wireless audio systems who want a trouble-free, reporter-style mic to work with their existing kit: Rode’s new Interview Pro is what you’ve been waiting for. This is a £221/$249, broadcast-quality handheld condenser mic for use with any Rode series IV system – that includes the Wireless Pro, Wireless Me and Wireless Go II.

A built-in wireless transmitter in the Interview Pro mic quickly pairs with a Rode Wireless system to record straight into a camera, smartphone or computer. It can also be paired directly to the Rodecaster Pro II, Rodecaster Duo and Streamer X just like an XLR microphone – making it ideal for podcasting or streaming.

It uses Rode’s latest 2.4GHz digital transmission with 128-bit encryption, and the claimed range of up to 200m with line of sight seems to be correct, even though the kit is optimised for close-range operation.

If you are using a Rode Wireless audio system, just turn the mic on, pair with your receiver if it hasn’t done that automatically and it’s ready to go. It uses a pro-grade condenser capsule for detailed voice reproduction, and its omnidirectional pattern makes mic placement forgiving. If it’s not directly aimed at your talent’s mouth, it’s OK.

Not only does the polar pattern help here, but Rode’s Gain Assist technology employs intelligent algorithms to automatically control the mic’s audio levels on the fly. So it’ll turn up the gain for quiet speakers and turn it down if a shouty person takes over. It works well, without overly obvious changes in level.

For the ultimate security, 32-bit float on-board recording with 32GB of internal memory makes for more than 40 hours of record time. This separate audio can be adjusted hugely in post, allowing the Interview Pro to be used as a stand-alone field recorder. The recorder has its own start button and mute button – but facing the person talking so it isn’t seen on camera.

There’s an internal shock mount for almost no handling noise, plus an internal pop filter. The kit comes with a windshield and mic stand adapter in a handy pouch.

Charge is via USB-C, which entails unscrewing the mic body to expose the female socket. This input handles firmware updates and allows connection to the Rode Central app on desktop PCs or mobiles. Here, you can set Gain Assist mode or manual input gain, configure and export on-board recordings, use the two-stage high-pass filter, adjust LED brightness and enable automatic timeout.

Rode has taken all the technology of the Wireless Pro system and brought it to a handheld reporter mic, making for a fully integrated system that delivers excellent audio.
