Sony unveils FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II

Posted on Oct 14, 2021 by Alex Fice

The lens builds on feedback from customers on the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, improving weight and focusing speed to enhance user experience for photographers and videographers alike

The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is designed for use with Sony’s E-mount cameras and claims to be the lightest f/2.8 70-200mm zoom in the world.

It promises to be a powerful lens for filmmakers, offering a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and advanced AF that allows users to lock in focus and track fast moving subjects with ease. Thanks to the incorporation of four Sony-original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors, the AF of the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is four times faster than that of its predecessor. The lens has also been designed to reduce focus breathing, focus shift and axis shift when zooming for a consistent, steady image movement when capturing video.

Independent control rings for focus, zoom and aperture make it easy to record video with precise manual operation, whilst low-lag manual focus control is ensured by Sony’s Linear Response MF.

The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II delivers high-resolution images throughout the entire zoom range and minimises distance-related aberrations using wo aspherical lens elements. An additional two ED (extra-low dispersion) spherical glass elements and two Super ED spherical glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration and prevent colour bleeding.

This is the first lens in the Alpha system to also incorporate an ED aspherical element to suppress chromatic and spherical aberration, which is a common problem in some telephoto lenses.

The lens’s large f/2.8 maximum aperture combined with its 11-blade circular aperture unit enables the creation of smooth bokeh effects, without interference from the ‘onion ring’ effect, which is suppressed by an advanced XA element. The lens hood includes an opening for circular polarising filters and variable ND filters, allowing filmmakers to get more creative with their lens.

The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II is 29% lighter than the previous model, weighing just 1045g. The lens’s centre of gravity falls just above the tripod mount, making it a great fit for professionals seeking a lens with great balance without front-heaviness.

Available from November 2021 through Sony’s authorised dealers, the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II will retail at £2600 / €3,000.
