Sony unveils Alpha 1 II and FE 28-70mm F2 GM lens, setting new standards for professional imaging

There are two groundbreaking additions to Sony’s Alpha series, raising the bar for professional photography and videography. The Alpha 1 II, a second-generation flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, and the FE 28-70mm F2 GM lens aim to redefine image quality, speed, and versatility.

Alpha 1 II: A New Flagship with AI and Speed

The Alpha 1 II is Sony’s latest flagship camera, boasting an effective resolution of 50.1 MP, lightning-fast 30 fps blackout-free continuous shooting, and advanced AI-powered subject recognition. The camera introduces a new “Auto” subject detection mode, enabling effortless identification of humans, animals, birds, insects, and vehicles.

Incorporating Sony’s latest BIONZ XR® image processor and an Exmor RS® stacked CMOS sensor, the Alpha 1 II achieves high-resolution output with enhanced dynamic range. For action photographers, the Pre-Capture feature allows recording of images up to one second before the shutter is pressed. Improved optical stabilisation offers up to 8.5 stops of compensation, ensuring crisp shots even in challenging scenarios.

Key upgrades include an anti-distortion shutter for reduced rolling shutter effects, a 4-axis multi-angle LCD, and ergonomic improvements for comfortable handling. Connectivity enhancements, such as 2.5GBASE-T LAN support and integration with Sony’s Creators’ Cloud, streamline workflows for professionals.

The Alpha 1 II will be available starting December 2024, priced at £6,300.

FE 28-70mm F2 GM Lens: First-of-Its-Kind Aperture in a Compact Zoom

Complementing the Alpha 1 II, Sony also unveiled the FE 28-70mm F2 GM, the first G Master zoom lens with a constant F2 aperture. The lens delivers prime-like sharpness across its range while maintaining a lightweight and compact design.

Featuring advanced optics, including three XA (extreme aspherical) elements and Nano AR Coating II, the lens ensures high-resolution images with minimal aberrations or flare. Its bokeh is exceptionally smooth, thanks to a new 11-blade aperture design. Four XD linear motors enable precise autofocus, ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects.

Designed for both photography and videography, the lens reduces focus breathing and supports seamless rack focus for cinematic visuals. Enhanced operability features include customisable buttons, an adjustable zoom ring, and robust weather sealing for challenging environments.

The FE 28-70mm F2 GM will also be available in December 2024, priced at £3,050.

Sustainability and Professional Innovation

In a push for sustainability, the Alpha 1 II features Sony’s first plastic-free packaging for the Alpha series. Both the camera and lens underscore Sony’s commitment to empowering creators with cutting-edge tools while prioritising environmental responsibility.
