CVP and Joe Ransom are inviting young filmmakers to bring their visions to life with the Large Format Short Films competition
CVP is partnering with renowned director and cinematographer Joe Ransom to launch the new Large Format Short Films competition. Young filmmakers have until 1 May 2025 to submit their film scripts to the panel and the winner will win a budget and tailored support to bring their stories to life.
Open to UK-based filmmakers aged 18 to 35, entrants are asked to submit a script up to 12 minutes long. “We wanted to launch a competition that allowed freedom with your script without setting boundaries or parameters to abide by,” Ransom states.
The competition’s main prize offers the winner customised support based on their project’s needs. This might include anything from a high-end cinema camera and lighting package to an introduction to the right director.
On top of this career-defining support, the winner will receive a £500 CVP voucher. The second- and third-place winners also have the opportunity to receive £250 and £150 vouchers, respectively.

With these generous prizes, CVP aims to break down the barriers preventing young filmmakers from entering the industry. “We want to take those obstacles away by supplying our winning entrants with everything they need to get their film made and tailoring our support to those needs,” says Ransom.
Upon submitting their scripts, ten projects will be shortlisted and the writers will be invited to attend a networking breakfast. The team at Large Format Films will shoot a scene from their film using Cooke lenses. This opportunity will give young filmmakers a chance to get targeted resources to produce their films.
Submissions will be reviewed by an expert panel, with the first-place winner announced at a celebratory event in July 2025. The completed films will be made between August and September 2025.
“We hope that this competition will not only spark the career of the eventual winner but also provide a network for the top ten shortlisted and a deadline for every applicant to put pen to paper and get their script submitted,” Ransom concludes.
CVP is also supporting young filmmakers through the Canon Stories in Motion competition. Read the full article here.
