Nikon Z 9 supports ATOMOS AirGlu™

Posted on Oct 27, 2022 by Samara Husbands

World’s first support for AirGlu™ BT via firmware update for Z 9 mirrorless saves time and money during production

A ground-breaking development sees the creation of a new category within the ATOMOS ecosystem for the Z 9, allowing users to synchronise timecode accurately and wirelessly over Bluetooth across a range of devices and software applications.

Nikon’s Z 9 is an impressive piece of kit, powered by an advanced 45.7 megapixel stacked CMOS sensor alongside the next gen EXPEED 7 image processing engine. An electronic shutter and an advanced auto-focus system uses a subject detection algorithm developed through deep-learning tech and 3D tracking. The collaboration with ATOMOS elevates the Z 9 capabilities to sync multiple devices and media on a metadata level. When utilised in the correct manner, this can save precious time and money on productions.

The first product on the market with timecode synching technology using AirGlu BT was the ATOMOS UltraSync BLUE. It expanded into compatible camera, audio recorders and applications. Sounds sophisticated. How does it work? Once the device is connected, timecode is transmitted wirelessly from the UltraSync BLUE and embedded into the media files each generates. UltraSync BLUE acts as a server to wirelessly sync timecode over BT for up to six Nikon Z 9 cameras and a range of compatible devices and apps. By removing the restraints of a wired connection, convenience and versatility are championed.

AirGlu™ was developed by Timecode Systems to provide accurate easy-to-use sync for every production. Users can lock cameras together and support dual system recording with separate audio devices is incredibly important and helps streamline post workflows. Best suited for devices within closer proximity. AirGlu™ RF (Radio Frequency) offers a long-range option and is the wireless technology for synchronising timecode over wider distances. Both wireless networks are designed to collaborate seamlessly to support devices operating together and create maximum flexibility for each production.

“Our partnership with Nikon demonstrates our commitment at ATOMOS to innovate and solve all manner of technical challenges faced by filmmakers. Even when a camera can record video internally, ATOMOS can add value by connecting devices and in this case, providing wireless timecode sync. This patented wireless technology was developed with just this scenario in mind, and we’re really pleased to find a new home for the Z 9 within the expanding ATOMOS ecosystem.” Trevor Elbourne, CEO ATOMOS
