Canon Expands RF Lens Lineup

Posted on Oct 31, 2024 by Pro Moviemaker

Canon adds three RF lenses to its EOS R system, designed for hybrid video and photo creators seeking top image quality and versatility

Canon has announced three new lenses to its EOS R series, enhancing its hybrid offerings for professionals working in both video and still photography. The newly unveiled RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z, RF 50mm F1.4L VCM, and RF 24mm F1.4L VCM lenses bring advanced video features and refined optics, catering to the growing demands of hybrid shooters who require flexibility across both mediums.

These latest RF lenses are part of Canon’s expanding hybrid range, characterised by features like Canon’s signature smooth iris ring, which operates seamlessly with 11 aperture blades, advanced low-light performance, and minimal focus breathing—a critical feature for videographers seeking consistent framing during focus shifts. Canon credits the innovative RF mount for enabling this next-level hybrid technology, meeting the shifting demands of professionals who want uncompromised quality for both video and stills.

RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z: The Versatile Zoom Lens

Designed for versatility, the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z is ideal for a range of professional applications, from sports and wildlife to news and filmmaking. With an impressive focal length and f/2.8 maximum aperture, this lens features electronic parfocal capability and focus breathing suppression, ensuring stable field-of-view while filming.

Its 5.5-stop optical image stabilizer provides smooth shots, even at maximum zoom, while compatibility with Canon’s Power Zoom Adapters allows for remote control via various Canon applications and hardware.

The RF 70-200mm also features a consistent barrel length due to internal zooming, improving rigging options and weather resistance. Available in heat-resistant white and standard black, this lens is built for diverse conditions with Canon’s high-contrast Super UD lenses, ASC and Super Spectra coatings, and dust- and water-resistant housing.

RF 50mm F1.4L VCM: Lightweight, Natural Perspective

The new RF 50mm F1.4L VCM lens brings a practical focal length and fast aperture in a lightweight, compact design, around 40% lighter than the RF 50mm F1.2L USM. Known for its natural perspective that closely resembles the human eye, this lens is ideal for portraits, event photography, and cinematic video applications.

It boasts Canon’s Nano USM and Voice Coil Motor (VCM) technology, delivering quiet and ultra-fast autofocus. This lens also has high-quality coatings for sharpness and contrast, even in challenging lighting, along with weather-resistant construction suited to rugged environments.

RF 24mm F1.4L VCM: Wide-Angle Lens for Context-Rich Content

The RF 24mm F1.4L VCM lens offers a wide angle perfect for landscapes, architecture, and environmental portraits, lending itself to scenes where context is key. Like the RF 50mm, it features a smooth iris ring for gradual aperture adjustments in video, and its f/1.4 aperture makes it suitable for low-light shooting.

The 24mm lens benefits from advanced Super Spectra, SWC, and ASC coatings, reducing ghosting and flare for clear, vibrant images. It’s lightweight, around 20% less than its EF equivalent, making it well-suited for on-the-go creators. Additionally, a rear filter holder allows for further creative control.

Meeting the Demands of Modern Creators

These new RF lenses reinforce Canon’s commitment to the hybrid market by combining precision optics, customisable control, and video-optimised features like smooth focus and minimal breathing. With the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z, RF 50mm F1.4L VCM, and RF 24mm F1.4L VCM lenses, Canon continues to expand the capabilities of the EOS R system, allowing photographers and videographers alike to explore new creative possibilities with ease.
